EVALUATION OF NUTRITION KNOWLEDGE OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

The aim of this study was to investigate the level of nutrition knowledge of students at the Fazıl Boyner School of Health at Kastamonu University. A total of 307 students enrolled at school during the 2010-2011 semesters were the subjects of this study. Involvement of all students was desired without the use of any sampling technique. However, for several reasons some of the students could not participate, resulting in a total of 222 student participants. A questionnaire was developed and used as a means to gather personal information and nutrition knowledge of these students. After determining body weight and height of the students, body-mass index was calculated using weight (kg) / height (m)2 ratio. The evaluation of body-mass index (BMI) was done using reference tables determined by the World Health Organization (WHO). Female (81.5%) and male (18.5%) students participated in this study with most students (29.7%) being in their freshman year. 96.8% of these students were single, 91.4% between the ages of 18-23, 32.9% were living in dormitories and 91.4% did not have a job. 67.1% of the students were found to take nutrition classes either through school (80.5%) or by attending conferences and panels (19.5%).The study determined that the students fell into the categories of underweight (9.5%), normal weight (77.9%) and overweight/obese (12.6%). When the nutritional knowledge level of the students was evaluated, it is detected that 63.1% was average, 9.0% was below average, 27.0% was good and 0.9% was extraordinary. It was found that nutrition knowledge score did not vary for students of gender, grade, body mass index and nutrition education of students (p>0.05).

Araştırmaya katılan öğrencilerin %81.5’i kız, %18.5’i erkektir.
