AN ANALYSIS OF THE ATTITUDES OF CHILDREN WITH EPILEPSY TOWARDS THE ILLNESS*

Objective: Attitudes are considered to be mentally and emotionally prepared to all related objects and occasions that are produced as a result of one's experiences and choices in life and have a considerable manipulative and dynamic influence over people's behaviors. Given that, attitudes can even affect the course of chronic illnesses. This study was designed to analyze the attitudes of children with epilepsy towards their illness and factors that influenced their attitudes. Methods: The study universe included children with epilepsy aged between 9-17 years old. The study was conducted in Pediatric Neurology Unit at Ege University Faculty of Medicine Children's Hospital and in Behcet Uz Children's Hospital Pediatric Neurology Unit between 1 March- 30 July 2010. Although the priority was given to include all children in the study universe, only 130 children with epilepsy could be added to the sample due to the limitations of the study. The study data were collected with a Child Information Form and the Child Attitude towards Illness Scale (CATIS). The study data were evaluated with prevalance scales (average, number and percentage distributions, standard deviation, standard error), student t test in binary variables, and variance analysis in multiple variables. Results: It was reported that 29.2% of the participants were 9–10 years old and 29.2% of them were 11-12 years old. It was also noted that 60.8% of the children in the study were girls and 97.7% of all participants were attending a school. The study results additionally illustrated that 94.6% of the children had generalized seizures. It was further reported that 29.2’% of the participants were diagnosed with epilepsy within the first five years of birth and 24.6% had seizures once in a month or more. It was found that 52.3% of the participants were using medication for 1-3 years, 91.5% of them were taking medication regularly, and 73.1% of the participants received help from their mothers to maintain regular medication intake. The average score of the Child Attitude towards Illness Scale (CATIS) was found to be 2.8±0.69. The time of diagnosis, the influence of epilepsy on child's playing habits, and child's level of knowledge of the illness were reported to be statistically meaningful in terms of their relation to the child's attitude towards illness. (p<0.05). Discussion: In light of the results, it was concluded that children with epilepsy demonstrated negative attitudes towards their illness. It was also suggested that long term studies were to be conducted to investigate the correlation between the childrens's attitude towards illness and factors that affected their attitudes, and that children must be supported to develop positive attitudes towards their illness.
